Lifestyle Changes That May Help Manage Your GERD
If you suffer from persistent heartburn two or more days a week, despite treatment
and diet changes, you could have GERD. GERD, also known as acid reflux disease,
is a serious condition. Simple lifestyle changes can provide relief for some sufferers.
- Keep a food diary – Write down what you eat and when
you experience heartburn. This can help you identify foods that you should avoid.
- Avoid foods that trigger GERD symptoms – Some foods
are more closely associated with GERD symptoms. If you suffer from acid reflux disease,
you may want to avoid:
- Chocolate
- Citrus drinks
- Tomato-based foods
- Coffee, tea and cola
- Foods that are fatty or spicy
- Mint-flavored items
- Sit upright after a meal – Avoid lying down for several
hours after eating.
- Sleep with the head of the bed elevated – This may
help to keep acid in your stomach.
- Watch your weight – Weight loss may help reduce GERD
symptoms if you are overweight.
- Wear loose fitting clothing – Tight clothes and belts
can put pressure on your stomach.
