Treatment Options

If diet and lifestyle changes alone don't help to relieve your symptoms, your doctor may recommend an over-the-counter or prescription medication.

Antacids
Antacids are available without a prescription (over the counter). They work to relieve heartburn by neutralizing acid in the stomach. If you experience heartburn two or more days a week, even though you've made changes to your diet and treated your heartburn with over-the-counter medications, such as antacids, you should talk with your doctor.

H2 Blockers
H2 blockers reduce the amount of acid produced in your stomach by blocking a signal that leads to acid production. They are available by prescription or over the counter.

Proton Pump Inhibitors
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are available both over the counter and with a prescription. They are effective at treating the symptoms of GERD. PPIs decrease acid production by turning off many of the acid pumps in your stomach.
